Garbage Disposal Repair

Is your garbage disposal giving you trouble?  Does it need repairing?  Is it leaking, humming, draining slowly or just not turning on?  We depend on our appliances and expect them to run efficiently without having to pay too much mind or attention to them.  When this does not happen it can be frustrating. Don't despair, however, there is help.

Some problems can be taken care of on your own.  Before attempting any of these suggestions, always remember to NEVER put your hand down the hopper (the drain into the disposal).

Lets say your disposal is not turning on and its not making any noises.  There may be an electrical problem.  Make sure the disposal is plugged in.  Seems obvious, but it doesn't  hurt to double check.  If it is plugged in try hitting the reset button.  It should pop up once it is reset.  If not, check to see if the circuit breaker has turned off in the electrical service panel.  Upon checking the circuit breaker you find that it has not tripped or turned off, there may be a faulty switch in need of garbage disposal repair.  You may want to call and schedule a maintenance worker to come and take a look.

Maybe the trouble you are having is that your garbage disposal is humming and will not run.  Once you turn it on, it may not stay on for long as the unit will turn itself off quickly.  The flywheel is stuck.  Something may be lodged in the impellers, shredder ring or the flywheel.  What should you do?  Just remember to not stick your hand down the hopper.  If you want to try to dislodge whatever is stuck, make sure the power is off.  Try using a broom handle and insert it down through the hopper.  Use leverage to try and free the flywheel.  If you succeed, you will feel the flywheel turn freely.  Turn on the power- but not the disposal and press the reset button.  Run a bit of water into the drain and turn the disposal on then quickly turn it off.  The short burst may dislodge the obstruction and wash it down. If not, again you may want to call for assistance.

Remember to maintain your appliances to keep them up and running.  Follow the maintenance directions in the users manual that came with your garbage disposal.  One way to maintain your disposal is simply by regularly grinding up pieces of lemon peel and ice.
